WELCOME BACK! This sheet contains important information regarding my requirements and expectations. Please read it carefully and ask any questions for clarification.
Assignments: Assignments will be given daily. In addition to posting in the classroom, they will also be updated online. Please check the website daily. Whenever possible, I will provide links to worksheets and handouts.
Responsibility: It is your responsibility to be prepared an on time for class everyday. Preparation includes having your pencil, notebook, calculator and homework ready, on your desk, when class begins. Class begins when the bell rings. Unless I tell you otherwise (usually noted on your assignment sheet) you do not need to bring your textbook to class. NO CELLPHONES/SMARTPHONES ARE ALLOWED IN CLASS. Please put your devices in your bag, silenced, at the start of class. I will take/hold any phones that are visible for the duration of class. Repeat offenders will need to claim their phones at their house office.
Calculators: Calculators are an important tool in mathematics class. It is required that students bring their calculator to class everyday. 620 students will need a scientific calculator. I suggest one with a fraction key. Graphing calculators are not required for 611 and 614, but they are recommended. (I recommend a Texas Instruments model TI-84 - do not purchase the TInspire as it is significantly different from the other two models)
Grading Policy: Grades will be calculated on a traditional scale. Quizzes, tests, homework and class participation are all integral components of your grade. A midyear and a final will be given in all classes. Grades will be posted online and updated weekly (by Friday night.) Please see me if you have any questions regarding your grade.
Homework: Homework is assigned every night. You will find that this is the most important part of the course and needs to be done carefully and without exception. Students will never lose credit for errors on their homework as long as they have tried their best. However, if an assignment is not done or is done poorly, it will lower the overall grade. A paper that is just a list of answers will not be accepted for credit. (No work=no credit) Late homework will be accepted before the chapter test but will not receive full credit. Note: Failure to complete homework has resulted in lower term grades.
Make-Up Work: If you miss a quiz or test due to an excused absence, you should be prepared to take it within the same number of days you were out. If you were out for only one day, you will be expected to take the test/quiz on the day you return or the next available J-block. It is your responsibility to arrange a time to make up missed work. You will not be allowed to make up nor will you receive any credit for tests/quizzes missed to an unexcused absence.
Extra Help: Extra help (beyond that provided in class) is available first term during J-block in room 2201 on Mondays and Wednesdays. Use the mathematics center!!! A schedule will be posted at the start of the year. If you require extra help and I am not available, please use the mathematics center as a resource! The math center is on the second floor of Cutler House. Ninth graders may get a pass from me to be released from study in order to go to the center. Passes must be obtained BEFORE study hall.
Attendance: Attendance is required in this math class. I strictly adhere to the school's policy on unexcused absences and/or frequent tardies. Be sure to have your parent/guardian call the school before 10:00 am on any day that you are absent so that you will be excused.
First Unexcused Absence: The teacher assigns the student detention for the teacher's next J-block. Second Unexcused Absence: Absence is reported to the student's housemaster who then assigns the student to administrative detention. Parents are notified. Third Unexcused Absence: The student will receive an grade of "N" (failure due to poor attendance) for the term. Three Unexcused Tardies = One Unexcused Absence
You may always email me with any questions. Please remember that I do not check my email regularly from home so if you email me after school closes, I may not get back to you until the following morning.
